Salary and Other Expenses

The salary you receive in Thailand is not a lot in relation to salaries in other 1st world countries, but with Thailand’s low cost of living, the money you make is more than sufficient to cover all your expenses and still save enough money, as well as having money for travelling. Teachers who come from USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa can earn an average salary of 30,000–40,000 baht depending on location, qualifications, and teaching experience.

Accommodation Costs

Here are a few general guidelines in terms of what you may be expected to pay for accommodation in Thailand:

3,000–4,000 baht per month – Single room with fan, bed and wardrobe. Bathroom may be private or shared.

3,500–6,500 baht per month – Air-conditioned single room with private bathroom, bed and wardrobe. Wi-Fi.

Roommates – If you have other English teachers at your school, you may choose to pitch in and get a house that you can all stay in. This will offer you a better price as well as more room, as you could probably afford a larger home together.

Food Costs

Food in Thailand is also cheap. A lot of meals will run you around 30–50 baht – depending on whether you are in a city or the countryside. The meals are also smaller here, so you may find yourself eating more than 3 times per day.

  • 4 meals per day – 120–200 baht per day
  • Estimated food costs per month – 3,600–6,000 baht.
  • If you are in, or nearby a more touristy area you may want to add an extra 1,500 if not more to the above total. Due to the fact that the costs in these areas are adjusted to accommodate the large number of tourists, these costs which the Thai people inflate allow them to generate slightly more income.

Estimated Cost of Living

Total Cost Per Month for Living in Thailand:

  • Food – 3,600–6,000
  • Accommodation – 3,000–6,500

Total: 6,600 to 12,500 baht per month

This total obviously does not include expenses for any additional activities, transport to and from these activities or drinks you may purchase. Therefore the above mentioned additional spending money surplus we recommend.
